Sample Learning Activity
Teaching third-grade students multiplication facts
Washington State/Common Core Standard: 3.OA. Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. A.1. Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5x7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. ISTE Standards for Educators: 5a. Use technology to create, adapt, and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs. I used the EdSurge Product Index to find the educational technology resources used in this lesson. Instruction: Videos from Zearn to supplement guided practice. These videos break down the foundations of a multiplication problem, asking students to consider the representation of groups, objects in a group, and the sum. Formative Assessment: Quizlet contains multiplication flashcards and matching games to provide students an interactive opportunity to practice their multiplication facts. Quizlet also collects data on students’ participation and progress, helping teachers identify areas that need reteaching. Summative Assessment: I would use Kahoot to create a multiple-choice quiz to test students on their multiplication facts. Quizzes can include graphic elements to provide a visual representation of groups and objects in a group to assess the foundations of multiplication problems. A Kahoot quiz provides student scores immediately, which allows the teacher to see instantly which students have mastered the material. Student data would be used through technology for student learning outcomes. Both Quizlet and Kahoot would create data that gave me, as the teacher, information on the students’ mastery of skills, misconceptions or misunderstandings, and areas where students needed reinforcement or remediation. Student data would be kept in an electronic grade book where growth can be evaluated over time. |
